GRX Hoops
For the past few weeks, every Sunday I’ve been playing in a church basketball league that is actually really really fun. I’m amazed at how organized it is and I’ve realized that I do need prayer in my life as I find out I’m dying to hear about the 30 min worship beforehand. I think it kind of rounds out my life, gives me a time to think and a moment of peace and clarity. It grounds me into realizing what’s important again. This past Sunday peace was set aside- for competition. My team, Elizabeth, was in 4th place and we were slated to play the top ranked team, Eve. Let me tell you it was one intense game. And I love intense. It was pretty clean too b/c we had two official refs who were really fair.
First of all I was matched up with this pretty girl who could shoot 3 pointers further than any other girl I know. She had this fire. Oh, my mistake. She was just angry at me. Apparently we were pushing more and more against each other - to the point where it could have boiled down to a fight. I would be under the basket and she would come up to defend me and push me with her hips so the ref couldn’t really see. If I didn’t have the ball and I was under the basket, she would push against me with her arms and shoulder so I would push back. I knew it was getting to a breaking point when she yelled “Fuck!”
I ran up to her and grabbed her elbow and told her, “look, let’s just drop this.” Like an 8th grader she whined, “you started it.” Oooooo, the drama was on!
She whined to her team, she whined to the ref. I had the ref come up to me and say, “she told me to watch out for you, says you be pushing her…” I told him she wouldn’t be pushing me no more and I wouldn’t be either. He just laughed.
Something she had over me was her 3 pointers. I have to leave with something… with all the girls on the court, I had better defense and pretty much I think I played a good deal of the other aspects of the game better, not that I don’t have my flaws… which I will not go around listing here ;) hehehe.
The second thing to note was one of the girls on my team left for a job in new york and left us with her replacement, a 3 point ringer that was just as good as the drama girl on the other team. She pretty much did what I couldn’t do.. run up the score like no other. We stayed on top most of the time and ended up beating out the top ranked team by 3 points. Niiiice.
This coming Sunday for the championships we’re going to play a team that totally shut us out before. There’s this really tall girl who can shoot over me without jumping. (boo!) and another 2 girls who can shoot, simply shoot. What differentiates their team from ours is that their plays and screens are well practiced and highly effective. We just go with rough plays or a change up in defense here and there. All I can do is hope and pray. :) and have a little fun in the process.
I do have a memento from attempting to steal the ball so often… I sprained my left ring finger real good. Monday the part below the middle knuckle looked like a grape on the palm side and a conehead on the back side. Over the course of the day it turned blue as I iced it. Tuesday I focused on massaging the whole finger, trying to get all the fluids drained. I noticed it didn’t seem broken and maybe the advil did help reduce swelling. Wednesday it totally looks like I hardly hurt it. Sweet. :)
