Poker?!?! I don't even know her!!
There was a lot of thinking to be done this past weekend. I had maybe 6-7 inches of my hair chopped off. I probably should have waited a little longer and then donated the hair. I also ended up spending most of the time losing myself in a book most of the day Friday. I borrowed Memoirs of a Geisha from Susan. It took me such along time to get through the book, but it was such a nice oasis for my mind to rest. Unfortunately my body suffered a bit. I stayed up until 4am reading and then on Saturday morning I finished off the book as soon as I woke up. Quite obsessive. (Roberto: “Indeed.” Natalie: “Quite so” Stewie: “Naturally.”, sorry playing off a family guy episode, but I can’t remember the actual words.)I really liked the book. The metaphors first and foremost… the mixture of culture and tradition and society… beauty, poverty and survival… (smacking my lips voraciously) all the way back to metaphors.
Friday night I also saw Harry Potter with Roberto and Natalie at the crummy, yet nostalgic Century 10, curiously reminiscent of my high school years.
Sunday I had bagels and coffee with a dash of Sunday comics with Susan, church with Lowell, then a potluck sponsored by Maymay and her fiancé Dave. Some of us ended the night with Gray's Anatomy (yay!). Notable Sunday moments: I learned Shane broke his arm playing in our game two weeks ago when he tried to block Dennis, we were late for church, and my two hour nap before the bbq.
*********
Saturday I had a late lunch with my dad and walked around our tiny town a bit. That evening I attended Anne’s T-day potluck. The food was great! I brought stuffed tofu from a Chinese place near home home. The best part of the night wasn’t that Harry Potter 3 was playing on tv, but that we got to play 2 rounds of texas. I must say that I’m a tad obsessed. I’m not very good, but just how I love to hear how much RAM a computer has, or what the pros and cons are of a new gadget, I love to hear about poker showdowns and shut outs. That night was no exception.
I guess it all has to do with my perception. Of the game that is ;) How much I’m willing to risk, how much I can change up my style, considering what you want to do with each hand- even if you know the grouping of each hand you still have to decide what to do with it based on your knowledge of the players at the table. Is your hand stronger than theirs? Can you bluff them out? When can you steal blinds? What path do you choose when they push back? Know when to fold- recognize when you could be beat and fold to save them from seeing your cards and losing more chips, you pay, but it’s worth it in the end.
I did miserable on the first tourney, but for some reason on the second, I didn’t care about winning anymore and the table let me bully them for their chips. I did actually have a pretty good round of cards for some time… until the guy to my right was cutting the deck and said, I’ll take her cards, as he only took off the top two. Then I got crap cards for the rest of the night. Hehehe. It came down to me and him. The ending was so picture perfect. I’ve been told not to go all in on an 8-6 before, but either I don’t know how to play poker and I was tired or I just felt this was the hand to go out on. The flop came up 8-?-? and he went all in. When he flipped over his cards I saw his 8-7. wow. The river came and left and took my chips with him. Nice way to end… pretty dramatic.
My babes had an even more astonishing hand. He and Joe were the only two in. I can’t remember what the flop was, but Steven had four 4’s pre river. Before the last river card Joe had 3 10’s. Steven put in a lot of his money but intuition told him otherwise and he kept back maybe 20 chips. Turns out he was right. I dealt out the last card which gave Joe four 10’s. I heard that this is soooo rare that if it happened in a casino, the loser would get 50% of the pot, the winner 25% and the rest of the pot is split to the people sitting at the table. Wow. Double wow.
So now I’ve taken to a new hobby, mostly in hopes of winning money from my family during Christmas time. ;) mayyybe thanksgiving, but I don’t know much and I suspect that just might be practice. I might even read a book about it if Patrick brings one in for me. Sweet.

What did you think of Harry Potter and GoF? I thought it was really good adaptation. It's probably my favorite HP movie so far. I just thought they got the importance of the story and edit out the other parts of the book.
